Precautions for conformal coating of PCBA (labor and materials) (Guangzhou Tongsen Electronic training content)
In the production and processing of turnkey PCBA materials, some circuit boards require conformal coating to achieve moisture, mildew, and salt spray resistance. During the conformal coating process, it is also necessary to grasp the changes in the characteristics of the conformal coating according to changes in ambient temperature and humidity. Below, Tongsen Electronic, a Guangzhou PCBA turnkey material manufacturer, will briefly introduce some common precautions during the conformal coating process.
1. Viscosity:
The viscosity of conformal coating changes with its usage status, and the flow rate is faster at higher temperatures.
2. Coating Thickness:
When higher coating thickness is required, it can be achieved through two coatings. Usually, in PCBA processing, the second coating is applied after the first layer of conformal coating is completely cured.
3. Film Thickness:
The thickness of the film mainly depends on the amount of thinner. A large amount of thinner results in low viscosity and thin film thickness, while a small amount of thinner results in high viscosity and thick film thickness.

4. Prohibited Coating Areas:
In the production and processing of turnkey PCBA materials, not all areas of the PCBA board can be sprayed with conformal coating. For example, connectors, software sockets, switches, heat sinks, heat dissipation areas, and plug-in areas are not allowed to have conformal coating. This can be achieved by covering these areas with tape before conformal coating or by setting it in the program.
5. Temperature and Humidity Requirements:
In PCBA processing, the conformal coating operation temperature should not be lower than 16℃ and the relative humidity should not be higher than 75%, which can achieve better production results.
6. Component Repair:
Repairing a board that has already undergone conformal coating is more troublesome. Therefore, functional testing is usually performed to ensure that the product is problem-free before conformal coating. If repairs are needed after conformal coating, the conformal coating in the repair area must be removed first, and then the conformal coating must be reapplied after the repair is completed.
7. Flammable Solvents:
Conformal coatings generally contain flammable solvents, so they should be kept away from high temperatures and open flames. Adequate ventilation should be provided to avoid prolonged inhalation of volatile gases and prolonged repeated skin contact.
8. Operator Safety:
Special attention should be paid during manual conformal coating operations. Since conformal coatings are chemicals containing solvents and are flammable, operations should be performed in a well-ventilated area, away from high temperatures and open flames. Avoid direct skin contact and wear gloves and masks.
