What exactly is SMT surface mount technology?

Today, almost all commercially manufactured devices use surface mount technology (SMT) because it offers significant advantages in PCB manufacturing, and in terms of size, using SMT components allows more electronic devices to be packed into a smaller space.

SMT surface mount technology and related surface mount devices (SMD) significantly accelerate PCB assembly speeds because components only need to be mounted onto the circuit board.

Today, virtually all commercially manufactured devices utilize surface mount technology (SMT) because of its significant advantages in PCB manufacturing and, in terms of size, allows more electronics to fit into a smaller space using SMT components.

Beyond size, surface mount technology allows for automated PCB assembly and soldering, leading to significant improvements in reliability and substantial cost savings.

During the 1970s and 1980s, the level of automation in PCB assembly for circuit boards used in various devices began to increase. Traditional components with leads were not easy to use for PCB assembly.

Resistors and capacitors needed their leads pre-formed so they could pass through holes, and even integrated circuits needed their leads set to precisely the correct spacing so they could easily pass through holes.

This method was always difficult because leads would frequently miss the holes, and the tolerances required to ensure they passed accurately through the holes were very tight. Therefore, operator intervention was frequently required to correct incorrectly installed components and stop the machine. This slowed down the PCB assembly process and significantly increased costs.

For PCB assembly, component leads were not actually needed to pass through the board. Instead, it was sufficient for the components to be soldered directly onto the circuit board. Therefore, SMT surface mount technology emerged, and its usage rapidly increased as the advantages of SMT components were seen and recognized.

Today, SMT surface mount technology is the dominant technology used in the electronics manufacturing industry for PCB assembly. SMT components can be made very small and come in a wide variety of types, especially SMT capacitors and SMT resistors.
